IOM launches MigrantInfo: a web portal that centralizes migration information for North America, Central America and the Caribbean
Panama City, Panama. June 23, 2023. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has created MigrantInfo, a website with information on migration procedures and requirements, as well as a directory of institutions and services in countries in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Migrantinfo was presented today at the II Regional Forum on Communication and Migration of the Regional Conference on Migration (RCM). This portal addresses two needs identified during the first Forum held in 2022, related to centralizing information on migration.
"Access to secure information is a vital human right in contexts of human mobility, for this reason, this tool is at the service of States, civil society organizations and the international community to unify centralization efforts that can improve migrants' access to key information in order to make informed decisions," said Tatiana Chacón Salazar, Communication Officer, during her presentation.
MigrantInfo contains information on immigration requirements and procedures; services for migrants; institutions, embassies and consulates; information desks; immigration advice and important immigration announcements. All this information is verified and comes from official sources in 12 countries. In addition to direct access through the web, information hubs staff will be trained to use MigrantInfo as one of the sources of information provided to migrants in different countries.
"Along with MigrantInfo, IOM's Western Hemisphere Program (WHP) has promoted other processes, mechanisms and tools to facilitate and disseminate information on key aspects of migration, for example, communication for development (C4D) campaigns and information hubs, which work in a complementary manner. MigrantInfo has been redesigned based on the information consumption needs and behaviors of migrants, so it presents information in a simple language that is understandable to people with different levels of education," said Andrea Dabizzi, coordinator of the Western Hemisphere Program.
MigrantInfo was developed by IOM with funding from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. This tool is linked to compliance with the Global Compact on Migration, specifically goals 3, 16 and 17. It also responds to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on reducing inequalities, especially with regard to the goal of facilitating orderly, safe, regular and responsible migration and mobility of people.
